Heat-Set Inserts for Automotive 3D Prints

Heat-set threaded inserts are useful when a printed part needs screws that can be removed and reinstalled repeatedly. Instead of threading directly into plastic, a brass insert provides a durable metal thread.

Where they help

Instrument mounts, removable trim panels, electronics enclosures, organizers and service-tool fixtures can all benefit from repeatable threaded connections.

Design for the insert

The hole should be designed for the insert family being used. The correct diameter depends on the insert, material and printer accuracy, so test a small coupon before printing the final part.

Install with controlled heat

A soldering iron or insert tip can heat the brass so it settles into the plastic. Press straight, stop at the intended depth and allow the area to cool before loading the threads.

Use the right hardware

Match the insert thread to the screw size and choose hardware length carefully so the screw does not bottom out or push through the printed wall.
